Listening with the Third Ear - The Unconscious as a Resource in Pastoral Supervision presented by The Revd. Kimbalee Hodges
Clinical Pastoral Education has long emphasised reflection as the cornerstone of pastoral formation. Yet many of the processes that shape pastoral encounters occur beyond our conscious awareness. This presentation explores how psychoanalytic concepts, including transference, countertransference, reverie and unconscious communication, can enrich our practice of supervision. It helps supervisors and supervisees attend not only to what happened in an encounter, but also to what was happening within themselves. Drawing on research in CPE, pastoral theology and psychoanalysis, this session argues that awareness of unconscious processes is a vital resource for developing pastoral presence, reflective capacity and authentic ministry. Together we will work through a CPE PER, considering how unconscious processes emerge within the pastoral encounter and how supervision can provide a space in which they become thinkable. Participants will be invited to reflect on their own supervisory practice and discover practical ways of listening with what Theodor Reik called the "third ear."
