CPE 1, CPE 2 and CPE 3 (400 hours)

These courses are aimed at providing intensive training in pastoral/spiritual care by means of supervised group and individual reflection on pastoral conversations. Using an action/reflection method, they require students to complete clinical work (pastoral visiting) in assigned hospital wards or other approved locations, together with group work, individual supervision and personal reflection/reading/seminar preparation and verbatim writing.

The 400 hour program is made up of:

160 hours clinical pastoral placement

140 hours reading, reflection and written coursework

90 hours group work

10 hours individual supervision

Clinical Pastoral Education 1

This course seeks to develop the students’ awareness of the dynamics operating in pastoral ministry by encouraging them to become reflective practitioners.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this unit students will be able to:

  1. Appraise the relational dynamics occurring in pastoral conversations
  2. Employ and evaluate a range of pastoral interventions, including active listening and empathy
  3. Articulate their pastoral identity and the boundaries of the pastoral role
  4. Evaluate the effectiveness of a variety of methods of theological reflection
  5. Integrate their theological/spiritual beliefs with their ministry practice

Clinical Pastoral Education 2

This course seeks to build on the first foundational unit of Clinical Pastoral Education. It is anticipated that there will be a deepening awareness of the dynamics operating in pastoral ministry and a greater appreciation of the reflective process. Students are also introduced to spiritual assessments and the development of Pastoral Care Plans.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this unit students will be able to:

  1. Analyse and critique the relational dynamics occurring in pastoral conversations
  2. Employ and evaluate a range of pastoral interventions, including empathic attunement.
  3. Articulate the theological foundation that informs their pastoral ministry.
  4. Evaluate the effectiveness of a variety of methods of spiritual assessment.
  5. Integrate their theological/spiritual beliefs with their ministry practice

Clinical Pastoral Education 3

This advanced course seeks to build on the previous units of Clinical Pastoral Education. This course unit seeks to further develop trainees’ awareness of the pastoral dynamics in a specialised area of ministry.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this unit students will be able to:

  1. Formulate a theology of pastoral care demonstrating an integration of pastoral practice with a coherent theological perspective.
  2. Demonstrate mastery of the complex pastoral dynamics within their specialised area.
  3. Critically evaluate the ethical and theological issues associated with the area of specialisation.
  4. Implement and evaluate a pastoral plan for each person in the area of specialisation.
  5. Demonstrate a capacity for leadership in initiating and facilitating group discussion.
